Church network in New Zealand

Current situation

Church Network in Auckland has a committed, foundational group, says network coordinator Logan Keating. He says they find much encouragement in being together, telling their faith stories and have identified seven issues that they have in common, which will provide future content. The people of this this network want to help people in practical ways to live out the Good News among those who don’t know God.

Across the country are people who have been involved with The Navigators in Student, Community or Church Discipleship entities, whose hearts God has touched with the Navigator Vision and Mission.

The Church Network will provide a way for such people to connect with others who identifiy with The Navigators and are focussed on taking the Good News to their friends and contacts. The network will remove the tension of competing commitments to local church and Navigator groups. The needs for community, encouragement and accountability will be met through involvement with like-minded people in a local congregation. The Navigators will seek to bring supplementary, practical help to their initiatives to reach their friends and will network them informally with one another.

A good example of what we are envisioning is currently happening in Wellington. Several ‘Navigator’ families are in a home-group connected with their local church. They encourage one another, study the Bible together, plan mission initiatives and pray. They are well integrated into the surrounding non-Christian community. They use such natural life connections as children, the local school, recreation, and community and family functions as ways to meet people. As they maintain this focus on reaching out to their friends and contacts, they draw on several Navigator staff for help, encouragement and resourcing.

In Auckland an informal network exists which has a lengthy history of involvement in Navigator ministries. People of this network continue to have a heart to reach out to people in their communities who don’t know Christ. They are currently connecting strongly with local churches in the city.

With the emergence of the Church Network there is enormous potential for a new dimension of partnership with these people. People who previously moved on from The Navigators to a local church can now remain connected and served as they live out the Navigator mission, linked with people seeking to do the same.
